Back in 2007 I tried my hand at progressive rock. I eventually churned out four or five tunes in this genre. My favorite piece of the lot was/is a song-suite called: LETHE (THE SONG OF ER).

The concept is an attempt at contemporizing one of the more esoteric myths of Plato (Republic X, 614bff.). A second influence is similar imagery from ancient Orphic/Bacchic gold leaf funery plates (found in tombs all over Greece).

The original mix was flat, tinny, and kinda blurry. So in 2011 I began remixing it on my old Power Mac G5. I got as far as a preliminary remix---I even produced an aiff of it---and then my computer crashed and burned.

Well, I never got rid of that old Mac, and just for a lark I would periodically try firing it up again... but to no avail. Recently I tried again, and to my great surprise and delight, it started up! I quickly began to recover what photos and music files I could before it went down again. (Which it did about 40 minutes later. I haven't been able to restart it since... DOH!)

Among the lost treasures I recovered was the above mentioned aiff file of LETHE! I loaded it onto my new Mac and remastered it in Logic Pro X.

While it still falls short of the remix I had in mind, it does sound WAY better than the original! I hope one day to be able to retrieve the entirety of the original project and do that final remix. In the meantime, this preliminary one will have to suffice.

My love of bands like Jethro Tull, the Moody Blues, and early (“Selling England By The Pound”) Genesis is evident herein.

I play acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar, piano and synth. Drums are D.O.D.

Hope you enjoy it!

Geez folks...Thanks for the kind words of support!

When I posted this I thought it would probably be ignored for the most part. Shows what I know!

Again, many MANY thanks to one and all.

Ignored? Never! I find quality songwriting, musicianship and singing is immediately recognized at iComp. I could never rise to the quality of the people I most admire here, but that goal is a good one to pursue.

Bro... I typed my note of thanks in a hurry and didn't express myself as well as I could have.

My point is that it asks a lot of folks to drop everything and listen intently to an eight minute tune. I'm occasionally reluctant to do it myself! As a rule, I try not to let my songs exceed five minutes.

As for your stated goal. I share in that sentiment fully. This is an exceptional site with some pretty amazing talent. A good place to call home...

I had a somewhat similar experience where I thought I lost music when a computer dies but found some old gems on CD's. Very cool sounding piece and I can see the influence of bands like Tull.
