My interpretation of the fantastic Julie X Nine by KDMan, who is rapidly becoming one of my favourite songwriters on the site.

At the risk of sycophancy (or at least, mutual back-scratching): having an artist like ponkey cover my song is a high honor indeed. I'm looking forward to the beer you will owe me. Or maybe green tea and biscuits. KD

(I am unable to listen from my current location, or I would comment.)

Man, this song made me want to curl up in the fetal position and just lay there and shake. Absolute 180 from the tone of the original. Great sound. Guitars and vocals are stellar.

Ponkey... really, really, really nice. I appreciate so much the quite different direction than the original... emotionally, it takes on a very different perspective.

I adore this. I think it is one of your best. Intimate, honest.... delightful.

all respect... etgilles

Can you give more than 5 stars? The production quality is unbelievable... Did you really do this in GarageBand? You have to tell me what equipment you're using... Please. 10 stars. James T

Un-freakin'-believable Ponkey, I thought of covering this song a while ago but I struggled to re-imagine it as anything different to the original. This is a truly brilliant transformation you have done here. I humbly kneel before you.

wow! thanks guys! Most of the credit should go to KD of course as it is his wonderful song...

james - you will laugh when you hear my setup. In fact the word setup itself is rather grand for what I have. the guitars are all on the "Thick Jazz" preset from the Jampacks, but with the reverb turned up to about 50% - and recorded by plugging my guitar straight into my eMac. The vocals are just me singing straight into my pinhole mic using my secret "live performance cleaned up" preset, again with the reverb turned up to about 50%. That's it. The good thing about doing all these covers recently is that I've been focussing a lot more than usual on achieving a simple, clean tone. It's good practice.

As for the arrangement it's just my usual method of "learn the song, then try to forget the chords and make some new ones up..." a technique that I only picked up in the summer when trying to play songs on a balalaika. Only having three strings to work with certainly stretches the brain a bit...

KD I only wish I had your gift for phrasing - I tried to make my version as different from yours as I could just because there was no way I could compete with the energy and feeling of the original. And I'm not just saying this to be nice! (Everybody: if you haven't listened to the original yet then do it now!)

Great ponkey! I love when people turn covers into something personal. This is an excellent strip of the song leaving just the core heart of the words and the instrumentation. Very strong. The original is also a very highly appreciated, but a bit to much 80ies for my personal taste. Your version is timeless. And inspirational...
