This is my first collabration with a vocalist. I asked Joanna Sandsmark, who has a great jazz-singer voice, to record something “strange, offbeat, or psychedelic”. She graciously put down some vocals for me (lyrics and melody of her own design) set to a simple bass and drum loop. I took it from there…surrounding her vocals with eerie strings (clipped from of Kronos Quartet’s performance of George Crumb’s “Black Angels part III: The Return"), various distorted sound effects, additional layered drum loops, and other surprises along the way. I wanted the piece to have a similar feel to Ken Nordine's far out jazz experiments from the 60's. Thanks Joanna for the great song!

No comments at all? But you did such an amazing job on the soundscape of this piece. There are so many intersting touches in this song. Perhaps it's because I know how simple the track was that you worked with that I appreciate so fully what you did with it. I love the emotional effect your work evokes. The rating is for your part in this song, Stun.

Thanks, Joanna... not sure why people don't comment on this one. Maybe they are not sure what to think? Over 100 plays, too! Anyway... good to see you joined iComp! I knew it was just a matter of time.

A truly interesting piece Stun and Joanna. It's not as easily accessible to our melody trained ears as most pieces we hear but I've just been listening to some deconstructions of songs sung by Cassandra Wilson and I'm getting onto the wavelength.
I enjoyed it .... thanks!

I can't believe I overlooked this one!!! This is awesome. I love the atonal background sounds. Some of the levels are little too high and it's freaking out my headphones, but this is a great song.

What bugs me sometimes about this site is a great song like this gets listened to 164 times and there are only 4 comments including mine. It's a shame, because to have so many listens, people should have something to say about it!!!

Great job guys!

damn beautiful.

as jd and jo mentioned, it's a shame that such amazing work would be bypassed. i'd say you definately succeeded in your stated intentions for this... such a great structure to this song as well. incredible vocals, all of them.

Now that is wonderfully strange. I'm gonna listen to it again. With the headphones so I can really hear it. (darn crappy laptop speakers!)
