A song about the girls I was too afraid to ask out. This one worked at a grocery store. That huge divide between the thinking and the asking...and all the anxiety inbetween. The name "Martha" is just plucked from "Martha, My Dear" which Paul McCartney wrote about his dog, actually...I think.

I'm having a blast eliciting responses (unintentionally). KDMan, you're cracking me up. You just reminded me I've got a song about a waitress...I think it was a Denny's in Ft. Lauderdale.

Sweet. My first teacher´s name was Martha..lol..but I didn´t fell in love with her. In my oppinion concerning the production you play too much around with the voices panning them from left to right and back. If you imagine a band everyone has his/her position..so a live situation needs fixstars. thx for the nice comment on " In Vitam Humanam"

Yep, I used to love playing with knobs...wait, that doesn't sound right...my infatuation with panning has long since passed (digitized from analog 4-track). Thx for the oppinion, tho. I listen to all advice, especially from those who have good production on their own songs!

thoughts from the bull...

i love the direct honesty of the recording of this. reminiscent of The Band era music, which seems to have somehow found its way to lost these days.

a very "Lovely Rita" theme which i can certainly relate to, and perhaps that anxiety you mention is why i'm so fond of this one!

great song! thank you! looking forward to what comes next!!

Have to take this one for what it is...an analog 4-track from '92. Thanks for the comments, all! Maybe I'll redo it, give it a facelift.

This is a great little gem. Love the lo-fi thing happening. There is a Does soound a LOT like John Lennon and that's not a bad thing. I don't think you shoudl re-do it at all. This is great! The spontaneity and warmth is fantastic on this!!!!!

I downloaded this when you first posted it and have been playing it every chance I get, in the good car with the cd player. Just wanted you to know that it never gets old.

If you do "redo" it, I'm not sure if it would be better? Sometimes first go-rounds are perfect.

That said, I'd like to hear it if you do decide to re-work it.

All fives though the guitar competes a little with the vocals. Not volume, but maybe EQ. I seriously think I may have blown some hearing mixing a tune this weekend. And theGranz is so right... this is symathetic with one of his short vignettes. So much talent, so little time to hear it all. Babon, If you're not on my favorite artists list you will be in abotu two clicks.

fantastic! Reminds me of the Kinks, or early Beatles. Great story telling. This one goes in the ditty bag. Some hiss under the track - don't know what that is - but it kind of works for me.

Thousands stars it is so brilliant. Love your voice of course but the feel you putted in the song with your chords and guitar is asome. I felt like if I was on the roof in London with Paul, Georges, John and Ringo. Citizencal2 said early Beatles but Let it be was nearly the end. They were at their best. Like you now.
I know I'm late on this one. But late is better than never. See ya

Hey JT, here's a good story about Nilsson:

1974 found Nilsson back in California, and when John Lennon moved there during his separation from Yoko Ono, the two musicians rekindled their earlier friendship. Lennon was intent upon producing Nilsson's next album, much to Nilsson's delight. However, their time together in California became known much more for heavy drinking and drug use than it did for musical collaboration. In a widely publicized incident, they were ejected from the Troubadour nightclub in West Hollywood for drunken heckling of the Smothers Brothers.
