When I was first learning to use Garageband, I picked up Mary Plummer's Apple Training Series: Garageband. The book came with a CD of training materials and demos to help teach you how to put together a song, and the one called "Highway Bound" struck me even though it was really short. I wrote some lyrics and used it for my first time trying vocals with Garageband.

I emailed Ms. Plummer to ask her if I could upload the song, and even though she's a professional musician/instructor (or maybe because of that) she said yes! Now I'm on the spot, eh?

Mary said the song is 90% loops with a recorded keys/strings part. I should redo the vocals with my new mic, but for now this is as it is.

Mary has a book on Garageband 2 out and is working on an update for Garageband 3, and I'm looking forward to getting it.

"SD" stands for "Song Doodle."

In case you didn't click on the lyrics button above, here they are:

I take the road less traveled
Gets me away from here

Take the car
Take a truck
Take the motorcycle
Take the pills

I take the road less travelled
Gets me away from here

Sounds great! I love your voice. Some of those loops have been a little overused on iComp, but I like what you've done with them.

Thanks, Vaporman!

Just want to reiterate the music was done back when Garageband 1 came out by Mary Plummer as a demo for her book, so I can see how the loops could be used up by now. I love the way, as short as it is, it seems to have a beginning, middle and end to it. So creds to her for that.

I held off posting it since it was her song, but she was fine with it when I asked, and I did want to share the little lyric snippet. I like to write (singing still feels weird to me, but Iguess it's about picking styles that fit the voice's good and bad points smiley ). Hopefully I can write more lyrics for folks; there are plenty of good lyricists here already, too! Very inspiring -- lots of stuff running around in my head. Just have to find time to do something with it all now.

Just a lovely track. A great mood, very intimate, even with the more progressive, 'wider' scope to the tune. I like where the guitar goes with the descending line "I'll take the road less traveled" at the end. Great stuff!

I do like your singing! You certainly haven't detracted from the 'professional' guitar. Nice/concise/evocative.

thoughts from the bull...

you know, i'm never bored at this site. the music i come across is constantly blowing me away.

see, if people from Hollywood were smart, they'd tap into outlets like this and discover artists like yourself. this piece is so perfect for a film, it's sick. it's got all the organic qualities of a song from the sixties. just the music and the tone imply so much emotion and capture the essence of heart, that it's a shame that the corporate Hollywood culture is missing it.

don't worry, though... i think that will all change in the next few years. once upon a time, people who worked on computers were considered "weird" or "geeks." that all changed quite rapidly, didn't it! hehe

anyhow, I rant. this is a wonderful piece of music. fabulous work and i'm so happy to have checked in!! thank you!

Dear Offbalance,
Your music is done well for the genre that it is. However i find a lack of music insight to what is going on. Something fresh to this song would really bring out its true colors.
Sincerely,
Brodylicious
