This is the second track of my new project, "Two Skies, Two Swords, Five Spheres," a series of pieces inspired by the life of, philosophy by and legends surrounding Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the greatest swordsman in Japanese history. In Eiji Yoshikawa's seminal novel on Musashi (which was adapted into three brilliant films), a fictional love interest was created, a woman named Otsu, who spends nearly a thousand pages waiting like Penelope for her warrior to return from his wanderings. Now, though Otsu is not a historical person, I've stumbled across an interesting theory about the origins of her name. In Japanese, the word for "dao" or "tao" is "do" (as in "bushido," the way of the warrior). An alternate reading for the character representing "do" is "tsu." Add to this the honorific prefix "o-" and you have the makings of a very rich symbol... the path that Musashi seeks in his wanderings and duels is itself waiting for Musashi, ready to guide him to the enlightenment implicit in the mastery of the sword...

Midi keyboard and drum programming only. Enjoy!

Those world instruments sound great. Nice melody and layering here...dynamic percussion. The fact that this is inspired by Miyamoto is wonderful (played by legend Toshiro Mifune in Inagaki's trilogy...available on DVD from the Criterion Collection for the curious). I love themed works with a purpose and a message.

I can see Otsu pining, and Miyamoto wandering alone, honing his skill. Looking forward to more.

Wow … this is something very exceptional. A great composition for my ears that fit into my worldsight. This has got a noble retention and keeps you listening without stress from the beginning to the end. Reminds me also on a CD I bought a long time ago from Terry Riley: " June Buddhas". There is a surprise here almost every day and even great things like his own follow the iComp uploadflow...so I´m glad it knocked on my door. Thx for sharing David,
RG

I really love the intimacy of the piece. And what's interesting, is it has so much space it feels like it's playing in front of a vast landscape.

Well done my friend, a beautiful controlled and emotional piece. Very cinematic, I can feel the reverence and discipline.

et.

Thanks, guys. I'm especially glad you all responded positively to the empty spaces, the attempt to mirror nature with sound and my cinematic pretensions. Hopefully the other 8 pieces will be as good, heh.

Fantastic, love the claps, the rest of the music and the foreword. What a great concept and production. I have only one other descriptor before I throw all the stars I got at it.

This is great!
Can I ask what you did first? I always wonder how artist start composing. Did you hear this whole thing in your head first or did it evolve from a single track?

Very nice work!

Thanks, pete! Yeah, first I came up with the little phrase that begins the piece and is taken up in the more rhythmic second full section. Then I played around with some chord progressions... they sounded more "medieval" than Asian, but I liked them. I laid those out and start playing other things over them, coming up with a few melodic hooks for the chords and harmony variations on the main phrase. I cut some of this up, moved it around, tried different voices. I found I had two major sections, and I added a short, more rhythmic adaptation of the chord progressions to ease back into the first from the second. After that, I started playing around with percussion, frankly trying to make it fit the multiple changes in time signature that I was forcing GB to deal with (heh). After that, it was a matter of tweaking and production, and voilá.

David,
Cool. Thanks for the run down. I guess it's like a painting. You start with a brush stroke or a gesture drawing and let it take you where it takes you.

Again, nice work!

Its not a genre of music I am used to so I'm not one to critique - being an inadequate musician, well not even that.

But I just can't find any fault with this. The production is amazing, on all of the chapters in this story.
I'm starting to like the clpas a lot.

I would definitely pay to watch a performance of this, although the show can't be nearly as amazing as I imagine it.

Today has been an amazing day. I've spent almost all of it listening to Mr. Bowles' music. I've ventured off to a few other artists and quickly come back to THE list.

Another wonderful piece.
