This is sort of a latin, bossa nova sea shanty set in ancient Roman times. I know, I know, you're constantly running into latin, bossa nova sea shanties set in ancient Roman times nowadays. But just indulge me.

I'd written the lyric a couple of years ago and decided to set it to music. I ended up keeping my first take, where I was making up the melody as I went along. I rather liked the spontaneous sound of it. I added some humming and a few more voices to the chorus (and yes, they're all me, even the "male" voices), to give it that "sitting around singing a latin, bossa nova sea shanty set in ancient Roman times" feel, and voila! A song.

For the sticklers among you, you'll notice that the Roman boy prays to Poseidon instead of Neptune. That's because I originally wrote this shanty as part of a novel I was working on. The character who sang it was a Greek sea captain, and of course, he wouldn't dare sing about a Roman god when he was at sea, so he changed the lyric. He did, however, delight in singing about Romans meeting an untimely death.

I hope you enjoy it!

Very very nice song!! Adorable sailors' chorus! Just one thing: me? I would have done it shorter...
It's a little bit too long, in my opinion...But lovable, however.. smiley

Thank you, Euphoria, you've been so welcoming to me! As for the harmonies, no, they're not always 'right'. I was trying to give it that off-kilter sound like a bunch of people in a tavern or on a sailing ship were singing the song. I meant to put that in the intro, but forgot. Everything in this song is a bit off-kilter, actually, which is why I had such a darn fun time making it!

Michele - yes, it should be shorter, but I didn't have the heart to cut the lyrics, so I figured, what the heck, just tell the whole story.

Ok, I've just been to your "artist page", I've read your bio and I understood that you'd never cut some lyrics just to improve the music impact...
I beg your pardon; I'm more a musician than a lyrics-writer. I often listen more to the music (and sometimes I'm wrong!) Anyway it's interesting to listen to different point of view, I think! smiley

I like it!. Heres what your info would look like if written by a honest to goodness pirate:

I love this song, Joanna. I felt just like I was on board a ship of carousin' sailors. I could feel the sea spray on my face...at least, I hope that's what that was. smiley smiley I especially loved the way you handled the chorus, including the men's voices. That was priceless! As for length, it teks as loong as it teks, lassie, an' it doon't tek nae more an' it doon't tek nae less. ;D
