Track 4 of "Two Skies, Two Swords, Five Spheres," a series of pieces inspired by Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the greatest swordsman in Japanese history. This particular piece concerns Musashi’s long rivalry with Sasaki Kojirô, another master swordsman with a weakness for spectacle and showiness. In April 14, 1612 the two finally dueled on the small island of Funashima. Kojirô was using a nodachi, a type of long two-handed sword about 90 cm in extension... he called it "Monohoshi Zao" or “The Drying Pole” after the long pieces of bamboo used to hang wet clothes out to dry. Musashi came late and unkempt — possibly as an attempt to unnerve his opponent — and killed him with a bokken (wooden sword) that he had carved from an oar on the boat ride over; he specifically used an oar so that it would be longer than the nodachi. Most versions of the fight describe how Musashi simply disembarked and with a single blow defeated Kojirô. Musashi switched to wood after this fight, believing it to be superior in reliability to steel.

Midi keyboard and drum programming, except for the tambourine at the end, which I adapted from a midi loop. Enjoy!

Excellent work and use of the world JP instruments: What a nice composition…what an intense work and what a creativity. Not really something for a dance or chill club but that´s not our aim anyway, isn´t it?!
Love it!

This is such a cool project, and each tune is as cool as the next. I can't wait til the next one. The layers of traditional instrumentation permeated with contemporary beats and influences makes for such a unique tapestry of sound. Brilliantly executed, production is gorgeous.

thoughts from the bull...

i love hand claps. if someone writes a song all in hand claps, i'll dangnear buy the album! i swear it!

more seriously though, this is an absolutely stunning piece of music. it reminds me, heavily, of my years spent in art school and randomly stumbling upon an installation piece where the art utilized visuals, scent, touch, and music to convey a themed message of intent. the music was often much like this piece and very hard to "label."

i just think this piece is brilliant, and it transcends "normal" or expected thinking, in the traditional sense anyway. or maybe it's that it actually returns or homages back to a more traditional sensibility? not sure on that.

it hits a spot in my musical skin that cannot typically be scratched and it goes across it like fingernails... and that is a very good thing.

a brilliant piece of music - real music - that is both rare and unique. i'm very happy i got to hear this tonight. thank you, david. great, great work!

Actually, 11s (as the classic Spinal Tap would have it) is more like the number of stars this gets from me.

So light in each layer of sound and yet heavy with conveyed action throughout. Masterful!

Musashi was a master swordsman, but you are a master musician with talents unspeakable
another flawless song
I love the break to percussion halfway through the song and then the continuation back into guitars (or whatever string instrument that is)
great work
