A short fast Rocker... This is a song by S.F.'s Bay area retired artist Josef Brinckmann (pictured above).

I followed this artist through three bands in a decade and a half... was always a good show with great music and personality. His music lives on in my mind.

Beta Monkey Drum Loops are featured (a freaking poor substitute for the incomparable David Anderson).

So, the story behind this cover:
Many moons ago there was a band from Minnesotta who came to the San Francisco Bay area back when Elvis Costello was a newbie and the Dead Kennedy's were king. They called themselves the Defectors and had a meteoric rise in the local club scene. They had a catchy Beatlesque fast paced show that left you humming melodies for weeks after seeing them. I became a rabid follower of these guys and this song was one of my favorites. After going through several guitarists the band broke up in the mid 80's and Josef went on to playing in such bands as Those Darn Accordions and an art band called WasReal and also did some session work with Tom Waits. In the late 80's Josef put The Defectors back together with his old team mates and started playing locally again, but the band packed it in after a few months. With his Defector rhythm section back together Josef decided to do something a little different. Somewhere around 89'-1990 he enlisted the help of an ex-Camper Van Beethoven violinist Morgan Fichter as well as a red headed violist and his then girlfriend (now wife, Bonnie) who was a gifted cellist and created a band called the Conspiracy of Equals. They called their sound Slavadelic. This "band with the babes" also rose quickly to headliner status in the area but as in all things Rock and Roll it all ended way too soon in 1992 and Josef has not been seen performing since, except for ocassional appearances at friend's weddings etc... stating burnout from 20 years of constant touring as his reason for stepping out of the limelight. He is currently the VP of R&D for a company making medicinal teas in beautiful Sonoma County. I have many memories of this great artist and am happy to have been a witness of some terribly good music performed with great charisma and ability. I post this song as a tribut to a Band that should have made it (in a perfect world) and to let some people hear at least a bad rendition of a great song... which is only one of many he wrote. As a side note, I used to play this song with my band the WindowPanes and it always got a tremendous response. I would usually tell where the song came from and quite often people would approach me afterwards with stories of the fabled Defectors. In the words of Brinckmann "the past and the future reside... together side by side"

I'd also like to dedicate this to the other members of the Defectors who, along with Josef, sounded so much better than my feeble attempt here. To David Andersen, Chris Lushington, Stephen Czar and Chris Diurni (R.I.P.).

Thanks for the memories.

I thought I'd already commented on this. Maybe my wife is right and I'm forgetful. Then again, I've never married, so she can't be right, can she? A rock song ..

Thanks all. This song means a lot to me, so I'm glad it's getting such a cool response. The Defectors sounded better than this.

This is a real ****-kicker of a song!!! High energy, superb performance and production here. I think this may be my favorite song from you so far-- but I do love the others so much too- so it's hard to say that this THE DEFINITVE GRANZ song especially since it's a cover song, but....

Love it, man. Really do.

Granz, you deserve all the praise you get and more. This is as good as any of your own stuff, and vice-versa. Just about everything you upload here becomes part of my collection. Your production, btw, has never been better.

Those Beta Monkey loops do sound good. Perfect psychedelic vocal effects for the recording. Of course, as always it's the guitar parts I like the best. Brain-piercingly great solos... but that's a given! This one is good enough to convert a few of those Electronicans over to OUR side!

Hallo the Granz,
I have stumbled into this wonderful surprise. Thanks for the brilliant remake. I haven't thought about this song maybe in over 20 years. I don't believe that the Defectors ever recorded it, but now I have your excellent version to listen to.
All the best,
Josef

I'm back for another hit. I whippin' love this tune. The intro (after the sound effect) gives me an acid flashback of that tune off Tommy (you know, The Who), the tune with the vocal, "I overwhelm as I approach you." Also I need to turn you on to some early live stuff by my 70's favorite acid band, Nektar. They got labeled "prog" later and faded, but that early stuff was pretty mind expanding. Well, gotta go drink some mushroom tea. Chin-chin!

Fantastic stuff, Granz. The vocal effects are great and mesh well with the both guitars. I like the pauses that slowly build back the momentum to the primary crunch. Good stuff indeed.

"No derivative works allowed" - and none needed! - great sound and one for the iPod.

This one should not be waiting 12 months for a comment. Loved it.
