SoundCircus/ThroatFair/OralCordCollaboration

Are you ready to take this whole collaboration experience to new level. Are you eager to play with a host of original new material, from not just one or two other musicians, but from possibly dozens. Are you up for the challenge to weave a vast array of styles and sounds into a single composition.

Thanks for tunning in to the SoundCircus collaborative contest, a chance to flex your creativity, broaden your musical repetoire, and and work alongside some of the most innovative musicians anywhere. And granted your musical creation rises to the ocassion — even win some prizes.

Heres how it works.
Musicians will tackle a specific set of directives and experiment profusely and randomly generate single parts. The PARTs are then posted to icompositions under a common user name specifically created for the contest. Musicians are encouraged to share their personal journeys that led them to the sounds end. This can help others connect with emotions and ideas.

Now suppose we have amassed vastly diverse PARTs posted from various musicians. This is the fun part. It is now up to you to find out how those parts all fit together.

With a community of artists this large, it is easy to see how this could get messy and problematic, so there are a few ground rules to cover.

DIRECTIVE OVERVIEW:
Muster your creativity, let the creative adrinaline lubricate your veins.

1. Compose a single PART or sound. IT MUST BE ORIGINAL.
2. Your PART must use a tempo of 100, if pertinent. This will enable other game players a change to loop and/or combine sounds in a pattern that may be more agreeable.
3. Your PART must be made solely from the human voice.
4. Post your PART(s) by June 12, 2006, under the common user name SOUNDCIRCUS. (contact ShowGram or Ponkey for login ID). Provide appropriate descriptions for each post, and share your thoughts as you progress.
5. Dialogue with others. Use others posts to inspire and challenge you. Create new sounds to blend with others PARTS.
6. After June 12 listen to all posted parts (if you haven't done so already) and download any PARTS/sounds you like.
7. Create your own composition..
8. Add additional vocals, if you so desire.
9. FINALLY, POST YOUR FINAL COMP BY FRIDAY, JUNE 30 USING "SoundCircus" somewhere in your title and indicate it is a final entry.
10. Notify ShowGram by email.

---------------------
Happy creating.

This little thing in itself is a gem! smiley Nicely done.. Although when you said it must ALL be done with the human voice... That was the catch for me..

Not sure about this, cause I have a really crap mic, and it would take ages... but maybe i'll come up with something smiley

Lets see...

Nice idea guys!

When uploading your song, simply select user SoundCircus as your collaborative partner.

Crap mike or not, ... i use the built-in pin mic ... hey. no excuses, hee hee. It is not about quality per-say. This contest is about the process as much as the final product.

The contest is underway, with 6 PARTs posted so far. You still have two weeks to get your contributions in.

And for those who don't do vocals, or make weird sounds with their mouths, you can still take the PARTs and figure out how to utilize them, and show us how creative you really are.
Enter the SoundCircus/Throat Fair vocal collaboration!

New Challenge.
OK, let me give some new directives, to open the contest up a bit.

It looks like only 6 song parts are in, so here is the new challenge. Anyone who would like to join the contest, may enter. You may utilize other original music and intruments in your final composition, however, you must use something from atleast 4 of the submitted PARTS. Other than that it is open game.

That's all for now. Good luck, hope i am not the only one who submits something. Oh, and stay tuned for other SoundCircus contests (we welcome any suggestions on how you would like a contest to be structured.)

I would like to contribute/be involved.
I had watched this thread from the beginning but have been travelling so could not contribute till now. I have a whole mess of vocal stuff collected. I could start posting some if you'd like for others to use.
I am also interested in using some of the posted stuff in an original composition.
I just wish we could have some Lilichi voice bits to play with. Or anybody's spoken or sung poetry.

Hey All. Pushing the Deadlines back 2 weeks from what was originally posted. You still have time to join! New submit date: Monday, June 26. So you actually only have ONE week. Final contest composition deadline: Saturday, July 15th. So you still have over 3 weeks. (thumbs up)

Thanks elder for your interest. I would request that if you use PARTs other than for the contest, just ask for permission. Although, I have no problem with it.

I will get some spoken word/random thoughts up (especially because they were requested), any other takers?

Just to clearify.
One objetive of the contest is to generate as many original various sounds as possible. almost like creating our own loop library or sound effects CD.

June 26th is the date for all those sound entries or PARTs to come in.

Then the contest objective is to figure out, (by utilizing only those sounds submitted for the contest) how to combine them together. This is where you personality can shine through. (I will make allowance for one additional music track and one vocal track to be added if so desired, but keep in mind the contest objective.)

Hopefully we will see how massively creative you all are. I am sure that even having the same limited number of sounds to choose from no two songs will sound even close to being the same. happy creating.

NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE

as some might already know, i have been having issues posting collaborations. i won't go into that here, but i tried going a few different places today (because i feel like a pain asking a mod to fix my problems for me eveytime this happens), hoping i could upload this while i was out. long story short, it didn't work.

you can still find my vocal manipulations here:HERE THEY ARE!!! (sorry)

i apologize for the hassle, i've really tried to fix this nonsense before now

Well, Howdy friends. As of this weekend, the SoundCircus contest has come to an end. I show a total of 4 eligible entries, one of which was mine, so with three entries, we have three winners! Stay tuned for official placement, and prizes.

The songs are:

Cirque du elder / By Elder
http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=41203
CircusFavors_SoundCircusContest / By ShowGram
http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=41209
3 Lili Circus / By Elder
http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=41266
uTTer muTTer (Sound Circus) / By AspersionDetergent
http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=41675

As for me, there are still some things i would love to try with the fantastic assortment of contributions that came in. So, if you too, have a work in progress, let me know, and you may still recieve some prize money or critical acclaim.

Huge Thanks to everyone who contributed. Your personalities are a delight, and i feel honored greatly by your involvement. Continue to create your own entertainment.

The SoundCircus will continue ... If you have ideas for how future contests should be structured, please let me know. FEEDBack: Did you enjoy this contest? What didn't you like? Was it too limited? Was it difficult to understand the objectives? What might have made it better? Etc.

I agree totally with your selection. The contest was really great. I couldn't manage more time to work in it but was honoured to have contributed. I am very inspired by what came of this. Kudos to you for organising this and being so patient with the likes of me. My only critique is that I wished that people were a little more uniform in their titles. For example, if all track titles should have begun with 'SoundCircus' (just my 2 cents). Looking forward to future manifestations of this.

The Moment you've all been waiting for ...
The unveiling of the SoundCircus contest winners. We had a wonderful time, and appreciate everyones contributions and creativity involved. And without further ado ... The winners are:
- - - - - - - -
First Place: uTTer muTTer (Sound Circus) / By AspersionDetergent
http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=41675
With a total of 41 points.
Prize: $20 iTunes gift certificate.

Here are a few comments from the judges:
I love that it's abstract, but it would be cool if it *did* settle into something like a 'home' at some point - a point of rest -- but it's still my favorite
the technical stuff doesn't take away from the piece like some of the other entries
uTTer muTTer was obviously more complex and I recognize the artistry ...
- - - - - - - -
Second Place (A very close second place): Cirque du elder / By Elder
http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=41203
With a total of 40 points.
Prize: $10 iTunes gift certificate.

A few comments from the judges:
Cirque du elder captured my attention the most and fit my personal preferences better.
I have to go with my gut and the Cirque is the one that I'd want to listen to over and over the most.
- - - - - - - -
Third Place: 3 Lili Circus / By Elder
http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=41266
With a total of 32 points.
Prize: $10 iTunes gift certificate.

A few comments from the judges:
The hard panning and the beat seem a bit cliche
I love the fuzzed out sample
3 Lili circus is impressive and it reminds me of something Peter Gabriel would use in the back of his vocals.
- - - - - - - -
There you have it. A lot of fun and work, and some of the most creative and progressive songs you can find. Once again, thanks for playing.

AND NOW ... Why not start the next contest. SOUNDCIRCUS II. Following similar rules, with some drastic changes. The main goal is to still provide parts or loops that can be incorporated by other users, but there will be more lenience as to how much you create on your own. This time we will follow a theme. Similar to the GunDove contest, whose theme was war and peace, the THEME of SoundCircus 2 will be Heaven and Hell. The goal will be to create a song that communicates your vision of one or the other, without being too cliche. Wether the song represents a physical location, or a place in the mind, the secondary purpose is to engage others in the journey of creating, along the way. Look for official contest rules to be posted within a week.
