The second track of Pulp, songs inspired by early-twentieth-century popular fiction. This particular piece is an homage to Conan, that Cimmerian warrior of the Hyborian age, created by my fellow Texan Robert E. Howard.

This track, actually, was one of the first things I posted to iComp, but I pulled it off months ago because I was deeply dissatisfied with it. A total reimagining was needed, and this is the result. I leave you with a quote from "The Tower of the Elephant," an early Conan tale:

"His gods were simple and understandable; Crom was their chief, and he lived on a great mountain, whence he sent forth dooms and death. It was useless to call on Crom, because he was a gloomy, savage god, and he hated weaklings. But he gave a man courage at birth, and the will and might to kill his enemies, which, in the Cimmerian's mind, was all any god should be expected to do."

What a great concept, yet again. Wonderfully layered, rich and vibrant. I can see Conan rampaging through the untamed wilderness, not willing to bruise his ego by imploring to the devices of distant gods. I'd love to see your take on Flash Gordon or other early pulp sci-fi....maybe some Fleischer Superman....

Balok, I've actually got a piece planned for this project called "Armageddon 2419 A.D." For the uninitiated, this was the name of the original Anthony "Buck" Rogers novel from the 30s (which is actually a rewrite of two earlier Buck Rogers stories).

"Conan...what is best in life?"

"To crush your enemies...to see them driven before you and to hear da lamentation of da women."

Awesome subject, perfect soundtrack.

Wow...the production on this is sooo much better than on Part 1 (Lady Greystoke). Clear destinction of the musical lines and timbres, great production ... prog meets world ... Great job! If I may, the only thing you may want to do is look at the overall dynamic structure...kind of give it some overall shape to tell the story.

Yeah, I need to revisit Lady Greystoke... good advice on structure; not always easy for me to create smooth and clear transitions

I imagine a middle-easten, forbidden temple when I hear this. And guess what, I *love* the stuff. This sounds like the soundtrack to Prince of Persia (which kicks some tremendous ace). Amazing job, Mr. Bowles - this is some true versatility.

I just couldn't stand being away from iComp for the several weeks that I've been clearing out my house in GA for the final part of my move to Kauai ... I had to sneak a listen, even if it's on my laptop speakers.

This piece is so you! Love it. Can't wait to hear it on my studio speakers at home next week.

So, now I am at home and the big speakers are booming! Love the timpani. Conan's sternness is very apparent. This is an outstanding piece! Courage is given abundantly to all who listen. Wonderful.

David, I'm just discovering your music and there's so much to discover. Cimmerian Steel immediately caught my eye and I plunged into your intoxicating rhythms and rock solid beats. I never read Howard's works but always loved his Frazetta covers - even had the pleasure of seeing some in the flesh. It was like all your senses came alive as you experienced his savage world. Not unlike what you've done here. I loved this. Just loved it!
