WARNING: NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! Scares the bejeezus out of me, and I wrote it. The track was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's mindblowing sf tale, which inspired the creators of the film "The Thing from Outer Space" (later remade by John Carpenter). Guillermo Del Toro wants to make the original story into a film very soon.

In Lovecraft's universe, the Old Ones (or Elder Things) were the first alien species to come to the Earth, colonizing the planet a billion years ago. The Elder Things, like most aliens in Lovecraftian stories, are unfathomable creatures whose motives and culture bear absolutely no relation to that of humans; the strange, hardy winged intelligent flora seldom die, withstand extremes of temperature and pressure, and live for aeons upon aeons.

These Old Ones built huge cities on Earth, beneath the waves and above, as well as bio-engineering the dreaded shoggoths to be their all-purpose slave race (until these shoggoths rebelled, helping to hasten the decadence and ultimate collapse of the Old Ones' civilization).

In Lovecraft's mythos, the Old Ones warred against many races (such as the star-spawn of Cthulhu); more than the rebellion or these wars, the gradual cooling of Earth during the last ice age finally spelled their doom. Retreating to undersea cities deep in the ocean, they have no further dealings with the outer world. Their last surface city, located on a high plateau in the Antarctic, remains frozen in ice.

That's where "At the Mountains of Madness" begins: the ruins of this city are discovered in 1931 by two members of an Antarctic expedition from Miskatonic University. Professor William Dyer, a geologist from Miskatonic University. On an expedition to Antarctica, the narrator's colleagues discover the remains of the Old Ones and realize this is an alien species. Through a series of dark revelations, violent episodes, misunderstandings, and insanity-producing events, the narrator learns of Earth's secret history and legacy.

Be sure to stick around till the end. Throughout, I use alien phrases that dot Lovecraft's stories, and there is a fair amount of frightened gibbering at the finale that you won't want to miss, heh.

BTW, "negotium perambulans in tenebris" is Latin, from the Vulgate, 91st psalm. It means "the pestilence that walks in darkness."

I couldn't find a place I felt comfortable screaming, so I recorded that while driving my truck on the expressway, heh.
