Okay...I've been quietly experimenting with some vocal tracks recently. Yes. Me. Singing. I never thought I'd hear it myself, and I'm not making any promises that it's worth hearing, but here it is.

This is a little folk song on the isolation of the modern workday commute. The production is a bit rough due to recording the vocals with my eMac's pinhole mic. I'm pretty jazzed about using a banjo and an accordion in a song, though. I used one guitar loop, but the rest is me.

Be merciful. Thanks for listening!

You've got a trained musician's ear, Balok...it translates to your singing! Definitely get yourself a good vocal mic and keep singing on your tracks. Very enjoyable tone and a sweet, honest song. Nice lyrical treatise on the commuting experience.

Your vocals for being the first time are very good, though the only thing I would comment, is trying to bring up the vocal a little more out, because its covered by the banjo, and all the other instruments. Besides that, you sing well, keep up the good work.

Yes, yes, yes, great tune!!! Well built. Wonderful harmonies and instrumentation. Your vocal is mighty fine and do bring it up in the mix. Maybe double it, if you haven't already.

LOL I believe we all start off by burying our first vocals. It's only because our own voice sounds so different coming out of speakers than our throat. The more you work with it and get used to it's sound outside of yourself, the more you'll be comfortable with it.

Do get a vocal mic and go for it!

Wow, a total departure from your other work, and I like it! Your voice has a very innocent, bewildered quality to it that the subject matter needs. Obviously, you need a real mic and so forth, but this is nice.

Agreed, everytime I record my voice, it allways seems to sound different than what I think it sounds smiley

Merciful...not at all. This sounds great to my layman ears. Follow Baboon's advice. Of course, the instrumental end is wonderful too.

Thanks so much for the comments! Very true, becwil...I still feel a bit uncomfortable about this whole singing thing. It's just very new/alien to me. I'm still trying to figure out how to mix them well, etc. It's a learning process.

You're voice has a beautiful temperament, and we all know you already write extraordinary melodies, so this is heaven.

Your instrumentation is always on point, with sublime production. So, now you need to do the same for your voice. Promise me you will re-record these vocals with a new mic. The right mike makes all the difference.

I like that you chose a different direction and instrumentation on your first vocal performance that suited your vox.

I'm sure this tune has all Balok fans turned on their ear. Fantastic.

Very cool. I second and third the comments about bringing up the vocals. My first vocal outing here, I did the same. when Ed took it and added some guitar and stuff to the song, he brought my vocals up and .. well, that sounded weird to me but it worked fine.

I love the tune! Excellent work as always!

I've left some comments on the mic thread you started.

A useful tip I heard for mixing: vocalists always mix their vocals too low, and guitarists always mix their guitars too high...

This was really good. Keep it up - I love the instrumentation too.

merlino Artist OK - 2 things I'd rethink...

1- Your voice is too much in the background and that's because you think you can't sing. BS...come on brother you have a great feel and let;'s hear it.

2- I don't think the third verse or bridge or whatever that 3rd verse was fits with the fantastic feel of the rest of the song.

Redo-refresh and let's hear it with some confidence in your voice please.
Cheers,
I don't do ratings,
Merlino
