The final cut from "L0T5 0F 0CT0PU5".

For anyone just tuning in, this was an experimental album originally written, sequenced and recorded as one song in 1989. I sequenced the song on RabbitMan's Roland D-20. There are 8 improvisational instrument tracks (the maximum for the D-20.) Each track was recorded in one take. As soon as I finished one track, I switched instruments and started the next track. That means I was recording for 6 hours non-stop !

The 45 minute song in its original form was titled Rain Dance, but it was re-named in 1993 when I used it as the soundtrack for a video titled "Danger in the Gym".

Now - 17 years later, I have cut the original song into 11 separate tracks to make it uploadable for iCompositions. I added fades to prevent the jarring endings and to make it iPod friendly. My iComp friends (Baboon, lilichi, nothing and jayman) in the chat supplied the new album and individual cuts with their unique titles (I adopted the unusual spellings myself.) The album art is a shot of octopus from the Fish Market in Tokyo. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit last year - something I would reccommend to anyone who has the chance.

My preferred method is still to listen to the uncut 45 minute version, but maybe it is better for some people to only hear this in limited doses!

I hope you enjoy (actually, I hope it causes some deep seeded psychological response!)

It seems that "experimental" is a way of saying that this is actually art, in the sense of something that creates from the imagination without reference to or permission from the forces of ideology, or commercial authority. (And that's a lot of big words.) It prompts me to reexamine my values and assumptions, not about what constitutes art or music, but about reality itself. Sweet.

I've downloaded all eleven pieces. So far I've only heard beginnings of each as the next dowloaded and then it begin playing, and so forth. I'm going to listen to the whole thing through in the next day or so as I paint on my current canvas. This should give my painting muse a great place from which to inspire me. I'll report back later.

Thanks.

Thanks bec,

I was painting a lot when I recorded this. Well, not 'while' I was recording, but during that time frame - if you know what I mean!

Hope your painting turns out great!

I burned all 11 pieces, in order, onto a CD and listened to the whole thing yesterday as I painted. It was really a very interesting experience. It's ambient in a way that's in between quiet and disturbing. smiley Actually, I like disturbing. And I really like music that is different. Your's has found a home at my house.

The sort-of-drum-banging noises ... were you tapping/hitting a guitar body?

The seemingly random rhythm was great for keeping my thoughts moving. Enjoyed. I got a good bit done on my painting as I listened.

Thanks again, bec!

No guitar here. The whole thing was sequenced on a Roland D-20..

I have heard that random rhythms like that can be used to help focus in AD/HD patients. I've even heard that some psych wards have used Lou Reed's 'Metal Machine Music' to help calm and focus extreme psychotics.

certainly not - and this is nothing like 'Metal Machine Music'!
But maybe there's something about a less mechanical rhythm that can somehow help people focus in a way that typical rhythms can't.

I seem to gravitate to this type of music while I'm working too (unless I'm doing audio work - then I can't have music on at all.)

I think some of the drones and other sounds in this album are almost hypnotic. I could easily see this kind of stuff opening my mind to a different plane of thought.
