Musical setting for a rather anti-war poem I wrote a couple of years ago when teaching Homer's Iliad and the play The Trojan Women by Euripides. Andromache was the wife of Hector, prince of Troy and brother of Paris, whose seduction of Helen gave Greeks a reason to unite under Agamemnon and attack Troy. She lost all of her family to the blade of Achilles, who also killed her husband; at the end of of the Trojan War, some accounts tell us, Achilles' son took Andromache and Hector's baby son and hurled him from the walls of the defeated city before taking Andromache as his slave. For some reason, this story has always awakened a spark of rage in me...

On a technical note, most of this poem is written in dactylic hexameter, though not the last six lines, which contain a Sapphic stanza and two glyconic lines (each with a bacchiac added). Of course, many of you won't know what any of that means, but the upshot is that I used really hard-to-adapt-to-English Greek meter.

"Me? I'm War among men". This is such an apt, yet colloquial-like, desription of her role historically. It suggests too her power of seduction and the relationship btw sex and violence.

Your use of another century's aesthetics as inspriration may have you appreciate my post "From A Borrowed Tongue".

Gripping, both musically and lyrically. Teeth-clinching. Where's that Achilles? I want to slap the stew out of him!

For all the grand idealism later centuries heaped upon the ancient Greek (and Roman, too) cultures, there also stands out, for me, the anger and lust of selfcentered men and women. Which is no different from any other time period of human history. Sad.

Liked the sparse almost cruel backdrop to this blood drenched telling. Having some of the ancient blood in me (loved the Greek flavored mandolin) I could almost see through the ancient mist these events happening before me. You've made this story immediate and vital. Very engaging piece.

Wow! Hell of a premise for a song David. No matter how convoluted a premise-- your story is clear. And the music focused. I like it a lot.
