This song is literally a decade in the making.

Ten years ago our band UnclEd had started recording a few demos. We got as far as laying down the drums (my poor attempt at recording was hindered greatly by the giant cinder-block basement we were recording in.) Unfortunately, events transpired that prevented us from moving ahead with the project.

A few months later, RabbitMan and I recorded a version of the song with sequenced bass & drums, but I was so sick at the time that I didn't even bother with little things like tuning my guitar.

About a year ago, I ran across the tape with the original drum track and thought I'd toss it into GarageBand and see what I could do with it. I played with the sound for months and got it to something I thought we could work with - so it looked like we were finally going to record the song the way we originally intended.

RabbitMan came over to lay down some tracks, but it turned out that we had both forgotten how to play the song. I laid down a temporary bass track and had him record the lead and backing vocals. I threw in a high harmony just for kicks. Then I went back to square one for a couple weeks and tried to learn the song well enough to record it. I was never a great bass player, so it took every bit of skill in my bones to lay this one down. Then I had to put my electric guitar back together. It hadn't been strung up for a couple years. I got everything recorded this morning except for the lead guitar. It was all mixed and sounding pretty good.

Then I deleted it.

That's right - I'm a moron and I deleted it.

Luckily, I had mixed down a version with drums, bass, and vocals before I the file disapeared. So tonight I re-recorded the guitars - again. I don't even know if they sound good at this point. But the song is recorded and mixed down and now I'm uploading.

Here is the group line-up:

RabbitMan - lyrics, music and vocals
vaporman - Bass, Guitar and production & high girly vocals
Cuervowithalime - Drums

Special thanks to Jombapohm3 who was the bass player in the band, but was unable to record at this time. Hopefully he'll get a mac soon and be able to join in the fun!

I worked for a year on my thesis. I worked full time, held down several part time jobs and attended Uni in the evening. My weekend job was a service station attendant on the weekends. 20 to 24 hours. Before going to work at the station on Sunday morning, I tried to fax my thesis to the supervisor. I was a month late.
The computer fax tanked on the eigth page, restarted from page one .. It did this several times. So I stopped the fax, deleted the bum copy and went to work. When I got home, I realised I'd deleted my only copy of my thesis.
FAXSTF software kept the unsent PICT files. I manually sent each of the seventy odd PICT pages of my thesis .. which was increased from 100k word file to 6mb PICT files. Sadly, the PICT wasn't of suffiecient quality to OCR back to text. I got a distinction smiley

Thanks for the kind words and stars guys.

dd, I can't even imagine what you must have felt when you realized what you had done.

For anyone out there using GarageBand, take this as a warning. I did not delete my only copy of this song. I had done a 'save as' of the song, but needed room on my hard drive so I deleted the older version. Unfortunately, when you do a 'save as' in GarageBand it doesn't re-save all the audio files with the new version - they stay with the old version. So when I deleted the old version, the new one was totally useless (except that all the instrument sounds& levels were saved - assuming I re-record at the same levels).

Bottom line - don't delete old versions of GarageBand songs until you're sure you don't need any part of them.

Damn! That was a blast from the past! Bits of that came floating back to me as I listened to it, as though from a great distance away. (There have been a great many deaths of brain cells since then.)

Bravo for finding the old track and resurrecting it!

excellent structure and composition... and considering the problems with production it isn't bad, although I think it's worth starting the recording process again, it's a really good song and should be heard properly!! nice one.

I'd turn the guitars up a bit... no I wouldn't. The mix is really right. This has a nice acid warpy thing going for it. I hope. 'Cause if it doesn't, I'm having a serious flashback. Whoooaaaaa! EXCELLENTLY (!) jaunty lead work

Thanks wakegirlsarah!

Bob, I felt the same as you about the guitars, but as a guitarist I always feel like the guitars need to be louder. I fought the urge and kept em down in the mix (except that lead). As you can probably tell, I've been going for less polish and more feeling on my guitar work. Thanks for the stars and kind words!
