Something I came up with for fingerstyle acoustic guitar. This is my attempt at learning how to record with GarageBand. I'm not satisfied with the sound quality, so I'm interested in suggestions. This was recorded directly into the USB port of an iBook G4 through the line input of an M-Audio FastTrack recording interface. I'm using my 30+ year old Alvarez 5023 with a Fishman Rare Earth soundhole pickup and John Pearce light guage strings.

A nice soothing, lazy sound to this.

I envisage you sitting on a porch playing guitar in a tilted back chair.

Very cool for cats, thanks for sharing.

Hi, this is lovely. You've got a great picking style here...love it.
Regarding the sound quality: In my experience, nothing beats a good, large diaphram condensor mic pointing towards where the neck joins the body in order to get the fullest sound from an acoustic. Fishmans are THE best in terms an acoustic pickup for playing live, but I'd choose to use a mic every time in the studio. The trouble is that the noise floor has the potential to raise even more when micing an acoustic. The only way round this when recording a single acoustic instrument is by completely deadening the space in which you are performing (by clever use of duvets!) then adding ambience via a good reverb plugin. This will give you the cleanest possible sound without too much extra noise. Hiss can be cut by manipulating your EQ so there is a sharp depression in the curve - but you'll have to experiment until you get the right frequency.

Yes, a very nice guitar style. Not bad on the sound, though JHarley might have some good pointers there.

Something I like to do is duplicate (sometimes triple) a track and add differing effects to each. Helps fatten things up.

Any plans to add more instruments to this?

Thanks, everyone. I think JHarley is right. I'll try recording it again with a microphone. Unfortunately, I don't have any good mics. I have an old broken mic without a windscreen, so I might give it a shot. I do, however, have an SM-58 on my "to purchase" list. I'm not a very good singer, so I don't pay too much attention to purchasing microphones.

I've thought about adding additional instruments, but I like the minimalist sound of a solo acoustic guitar. I've thought about adding a backing track with strings or a warm pad sound and a little light latin style percussion.

I do like becwil's suggestion for duplicating tracks. I think I'll give that a shot. If I like the results, I'll post a new version.

Thanks for your comment, plexaura. One of these days I'm going to give JHarley's suggestions a shot. Actually, I've always heard that its best to record an acoustic guitar using a microphone than with a pickup. But, microphones are certainly less forgiving than pickups, especially since I get so much finger squeak when I play, so I'm a little bit afraid of them.

Sorry I'm not experienced enough yet to offer tips on recording, and these other artists seem to have it covered quite well anyway. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed that piece of music and also your playing style. Really nice stuff!

A very nice, smooth composition that does seem apt for an afternoon curl-up in a sun beam. Hope the cats like it -- I sure did!
