A friend came back lately from Africa and told me some unbelievable stories. Mali is starving, like most of Africa countries. Many farmers suicides...

Then this Bob Dylan tune came back to my mind too...Tried to cover it...

I dont consider myself as a blues singer at all, but i guess the song structure (11 verses, two chords) is blues.

Instruments i tried to play : acoustic and electric guitars, borrowed resonator guitar, bass, mandolin, organ, harmonica, percs.

Be warned, this is a long monotone one...

Exquisite Artwork kindly offered and painted by the ever surprising Mr Geiger :

Ok....so this is a song by Bob Dylan...don't think I've ever heard it!? I guess I've missed a lot...need to catch up....fast smiley

I love this tune and I love the the fact that it's quite monotone. A slow and interesting build.

Great Bob....eh sorry..Dylan...eeeehh....whatever smiley

A great cover of a great song. It would seem that world leaders have turned a blind eye towards Africa. Even the UN has failed to support it's own efforts. Rwanda is eveidence of that.

You have good heart, Dylan. I'm proud to know you.

IMHO, it's important to plug right back into one's musical roots. Actually, at some point it becomes imperative to do so. Great journey home, Dylan. smiley

Excellent sound choice and well done. The mix is really well done. The resonator guitar is very subtly done. Great sound overall!

There's one thing i really like about the tunes you post here Dylan : each time i'm about to listen, i don't know if i will laugh or cry...
You captured the inner tension of Bob Dylan lyrics perfectly. I agree with others, you've done something very special and full of emotions. Feels like a movie, like we're in this cabin with them.
Not to mention the great production (on GarageBand...incredible !), the masterful playing and your always-on-the-spot vocals.

Splendid.

The delay on the guitars on this is really cool, and then the fuzzy stuff so that comes in so subtley in the background. That's cool too. You have a very strong voice....interesting tone.

Nice to hear this with a fresh approach, Dylan. Bob's version is kind of harsh and in your face, and draws you into the poor guys boots, while your version is more like Paris Texas, it's the big picture all the way.

You can't help but know there are a million people out there on the edge of this situation.

Very impressed here.

Really like this cover, you've almost brought a Chris Issak sound here as well. Borderline perfection! This is really good!
Stirring artwork as well, ties right in to the everyday reality of ongoing suffering. I know that sounds sad, but truly is less fortunates reality.

I know this track from 'Yellow Moon' from the Nevilles and it's not an easy track to make your own- which it is fair to say that you have here Dylan. I heard it on the headphones and your production values this last year have been your best. Floored as usual and my ipod is running out of space!

From the first note sung...purity and honest essence. Love the way the guitar notes ping-pong around...fills the space in a sparse echoing way...like hunger in an empty belly.

Thank you so much for your nice comments, y'all...

I suppose this song is only asking questions...no clever answers yet. Dont wait for politics. What shall we do ? Maybe it starts with no longer buying diamonds from Sierra Leone, Firestone rubber from Liberia, cheap stuff from all big companies there ?

Dunno...it's only sad, bad, and we're all useless witnesses...I just feel like one of them.

Robert Allen Zimmerman never claimed to be Blooz player either. However, he did claim Robert Johnson as fundamental ground and eventually tangled up with Bloomfield. Sounds good to me. Musical Dylnquency is creativeness when done with respect. You did that.

A very powerful song the first time I heard it and your version does it justice very nicely. I love these lesser known early songs of Bob's. Your updating of the tune to a more modern sound comes off quite well.

Great playing and what an incredible arrangement! The heartfelt vocals and captivating instrumentation keep things interesting throughout, hardly monotonous!. I like the dirty guitar mixed low and with lots of reverb - works really well against the acoustic instruments. The artwork is very cool indeed, and helps elaborate the imagery conjured by the song. Brilliant Dylan!

Bob Dylan is "the" artist during my whole life and, when I was so much youger, I began to play guitar whith the songs from the album "The Times They Are A-Changing", and especially with the Ballad of Hollis Brown that I sang and sang again.

Your version is great, great, great... You made it with total respect of the original song's spirit. Many thanks for this beautiful gem.
