Our most ambitious project yet, and our first quintet collaboration. Woohoo!

It was always a dream of mine to write and perform a female-fronted symphonic rock/metal song. I had no idea I'd find the perfect selection of collaborators here on iComp. This tune took some time to get together, but we're really pleased with the end result.

This is a very dramatic song, with many exclamation points, both subtle and obvious. We hope you take the time to listen to and appreciate them. This song will be on our upcoming double CD, Pangaea, which we hope to wrap up this fall.

Nadie: Vocals/lyrics. A special note of thanks to Nadie for suggestions in nudging the song in the direction she did. What a superb performance she put into this track.

Balok: Orchestration. Balok delivered the goods on this one. I'm afraid I've exfoliated the one remaining metal hair on his head, but it was worth it. The ending build still (!!) gives me goosebumps.

James: Drums. Another stellar performance by our resident drummer extraordinaire. James continues to impress us with his ability to craft the perfect drum tracks for our very wide range of music.

John: Keyboards. The middle part of the song wouldn't have been what it is without his contributions. The classic DGO stamp.

Me: Music/mix/stringed things.

Thanks for listening!

Jay

As epic as it gets. Nadie's voice is just so strong and commanding. That roster is quite a line-up too. Enjoyed the change in the latter half. Lots of great tones and runs in there Jay. DGO and Balok in the same track - Icomp has it all!

An amazing journey. Well worth the wait. Just listening to Balok makes me want to spend vast sums of money on orchestral libraries. You know I like the layering thing, and this really, really works for me. Top work.

It is always awesome when we can work with lots of crazy creators. Great result. The voices are awesome but i think the music texture is a little bit far. The second part is better in this aspect.
I terms of composition there is nothing to say (superb). Each one make the sufficient to mold this diamond.
Congratulations.

I really do not like the cymbals, they sound like real bad low fi quality, back to the shop and get some Zildjians and then do a decent recording smiley I do like the mix and the layers/dubs, it rocks.

I don't think gnialf is a fan of midi drum kits... they are what they are, if you can find a way past that short coming, you'll hear a very good drumming performance.

Nadie could sing the phone book and I'd enjoy it ! The song has great contrasts and textures to it, well produced as ever ! I love the 2nd part of the song, it's an unexpected turn.

Top marks fellas.

If only the production could match the epic awesomeness of this piece-- particularly the recording/mix quality of the guitar and drums. Regardless, this would sound amazing in a professional studio. Very very cool. Nadie's tone and vocal harmonies make Nightwish look bad.

Epic is a good description.

The metal "chugging" riff is just a bit heavy in parts of the first half of the song, but well played. It cover Nadies' vocals just a bit too much. I too love the change at the mid point. When the heavy riffage returns it seems like a better level in the mix.

super work, all of you!

very sorry, I don't like the mix
no moderates (nuances in French),
Nadie's voice is too dry and guitars riff is too proeminent...

Maybe it is a genre but it's sounds too sharp to my ears...

Re listenned with Hd25 headphones after monitoring speakers I can see it's clipping...

need more lightened and clearer mix to my humble opinion...

The middle part is classic DGO and FG. I think sometimes John's input gets overlooked as they can be subtle at times, but here it's great.

Balok- as usual- simply stellar stuff!

But I have a few thoughts:

I'm with Dave about Nadie. Man, is she amazing or what?!?!
I have been privileged to listen to various mixes throughout this song and each one has gotten better. I particularly love the new mix of Nadie's vocals especially the excellent harmony vocals being more up front.

I think some of the listeners need to understand the limitations of digital drums. I too often feel that the cymbals are not quite there, but still one cannot discount how good a drummer James is, nor should they!!! I don't know how or if the MIDI files can be managed, but if the velocity of the cymbals could be modified, that would be all the tweaking one would need to make them sound more natural, I think.

I do feel that some of the riffs are too heavy though, and overpowering (just like what pete said) in the beginning part. The solo in the end- could actually be a bit higher in the mix there as dimensionally, it feels on par with the orchestra, which may have been what you want, but I'd rather have one of the two be spotlighted more. Especially with such an awesome climax at the end!

In short, this is definitely one FG's best. Everyone really plays great on this one.

Excellent!!!

Haha this is now a ringtone on my iPhone smiley

Now that I finally found my headphones, I can actually comment better on this song.

I love the strings in this. Excellent job, Balok. I think there should be more of that in some more of your songs.

And then when the acoustic guitar is playing by itself. I think that part is awesome, but maybe add like a little simple hi-hat beat to it. (by the way, excellent drums james, as always.)

And for Nadie, Jay, and John, awesome job to you guys too. smiley

i have to say that as a composition, this piece is grand - the production is definitely in need of some focus if this is going to be marketed.... But, that does NOT take away from the quality of the song - personally, i like to hear mixes that sound like a band, and not like a protools madman in a splcing frenzy, and so often, heavier music like this gets that treatment.

i play rolands as well, and i can tell you that some of the sounds are less than good, but with a midi connection and a little bit of brain sweat you can get a quality sound - BUT that does not take away from the CHOPS, and James is a solid player - so much so that i am going to go RIGHT now and listen to some of his stuff...

as far as nadie is concerned, i have always felt that her presence on this site and her willingess and desire to collab with others is a blessing.

thanks for posting this.

This is tremendous - echoing After Forever, Epica and many other similar female-fronted heavy metal acts. I would have liked a culmination of Nadie's pipes, but she seemed restrained to the very end - same goes for the drums. Great guitarwork and stellar production; Balok's touch is a gem.
