The settlement in Jamestown, VA celebrated it's 400th anniversary this summer, and I wrote this song from the perspective of a young man writing a letter home to his wife.

It's always a real treat to log in to this site and see your name associated with a new song in my favorite artists area. You never disappoint! EVER! This is no exception.

A wonderful, honest and intimate recording that is exactly what this song needed.

I just read some liner notes from CSNY's box set, while quoting Stephen Stills' comments about "Find The Cost of Freedom" for the C.O. Anyway, while perusing the liner notes, I read his comments on one of my favorite songs by him, "Thoroughfare Gap", which he feels (and I tend to agree) is one of his best songs, from a literary standpoint.

Now Stephen Stills is one of my very favorite artists, highly underrated- never disappointing. Just like you.

He could learn from you.

And he'd also be totally enamored with a song like this.

We need more singer/songwriters like you, Stephen and few others, in this world.

Can't add much more to the JD long love letter. I think he's absolutely right. I READ your songs as you're singing. Doesnt happen so often...

Cant explain exactly why (it's not the same topic)..but this reminds me of Elvis Costello's "American Without Tears", from the 'King Of America' album. Just a feeling..

Shook my world. The timbres on guitar and vix are soft and I love em. Lyrically beautiful. Played and sang masterfully.
p.s.. Only after I read jdw, did I know what it was that it reminded me -- Chimes of Freedom off my 2nd fav. Dylan album off all things

Thanks for the very kind comments! This song was inspired by a classmate of my daughter's, who wrote a letter similar to this for a "Daughters of the American Revolution" contest. I tend to look for the "trembling" behind historical events instead of the heroics. Pharm, that's why I too like Chimes of Freedom -- you feel the loneliness and struggle and fear in the moment. Same struggle in JD's reference from Thoroughfare Gap -- "to the never ending pull of the steepening grade that's before you."

Dylan, I have not heard "American Without Tears", but many EC fans have told me I need to buy "King of America". Thanks again for listening.

Peace,
Paul

Always very impressed by your writing and the story here is put down exactly the way you wanted it - with a "trembling" hand. I agree with JD, Pharm and Dylan on the depth of the great artists this reminds me of and I will add Paul Simon to that list of those you conjure.

I don't like saying this or that reminds me of that and this, all I know is this is a wonderful song delivered with grace, and feeling, with outstanding lyrics, and I thank you for that.

Brother Paul!

So glad to hear this up here where it belongs. I like hearing your voice a little lower like this. I think it's your sweet spot.

This is beautiful,
Ed

Brother Ed!

Thanks for the comment. Ed and I worked on this at Holden Beach this summer and had some nice memories together with our families. My Blue Ridge guitar may have been a casualty of the salt air and humidity -- my pegs are corroded, big time!

Peace,
Paul

You know, though this song is great as it is, an intimate guitar piece, it would work swimmingly with a bass, soft percussion, and REM-style string arrangements. In fact, this is definitely Stipe territory, or at least they share borders. This might just be my love of "Automatic for the People" talking.

Great song though, Paul. I'm liking your inspirations for the majority of the songs I have heard so far - introspection, nostalgia and harking for times of old. It's not hard to see how everyone loves such universal themes.
