I've mentioned before that Yes and Steve Howe re-directed me at a young age... I was a drummer, and when i heard Steve Howe, I just wanted to learn how to do what he was doing... i had never been so moved by guitar and this song is one of the songs that turned my head... he covered so many styles, and with such mastery and artistic intent... I've been playing this for years, and decided to try and record it... this took quite awhile, and I could prol keep mixing forever and never post it... keep in mind that while we can eventually learn what these guys are doing... that doesn't mean that I can sing effortlessly like Jon Anderson... as a matter of fact... effort is what you're hearing... sometimes I just had to open my throat and go for it... dogs were barking all over the neiborhood...

Excellent cover. I love how you have the Steve Howe schtick down to a tee. Not an easy thing to do. And your Jon Anderson impersonation is pretty darn good.

I saw 'Starship Trooper' and just about couldn't believe my eyes. One of my lifelong favorites.
"What the...?, who covers Starship Trooper" is what I said out loud. Amazing - and you really pulled it off. Sounds great.

(Steve Howe (and Yes) changed my life too.)

I too am a big Yes fan, and couldn't believe anyone would cover this here. I love it, and your vocals are dead on my friend, those dogs were clearly barking at something else. smiley
Great cover, you nailed it. I agree with Pharm, they sounded like this live.

The vocal is almost spot on and wonderful in and of itself. The harmonies are perfect!
The guitar, both electric and acoustic, and bass are also almost perfect.
The only issues I've with the track are the drums and synth. The started a bit spasmodic but somehow got better as the song progressed. The synth should be brought up in the mix a bit.
You've a winning track here and with the proper mixing an absolute top track!
I love the band YES and think you have created a wonderful cover. It goes to my favs and if you get it mixed properly I would buy it!

This hits home. I too, was touched by this particular recording(and many other Yes songs) back in the day(I hate that expression) I use to drive around in my vw with this stuff, being interrupted by the clicking of the eight track machine.
I've seen many Yes showes including the Fragile Tour.
enough about me

this really hits home.
this must have been fun. And long time coming as I read.
You really have covered a great tune.
You even nailed the Chris Squier stuff
The solos are so cookin
too hot to touch
thanks for this flash back

I'm coning back for this when I can listen and re-listen and do it loud. I can honestly say this is the most amazing covewr I have heard at iComps (particularly for a guitaris to hear, meaning: no offense to the piano-driven Lady Madonna by Borris and theGranz!). I can't express my blwn-away-edness except to say that I literally have chills up my spine from this. It's a rare and bizarre thing to be so moved at such a ripe age of 48 by the appreciation of a musician's efforts that pay off so well.... and with no loops. Holy mother of Pearl (and Fender).

When I saw you had done this cover I thought 2 things.... Firstly I know you're a damn good artist and couldn't imagine you killing a piece but.... second... this is my favourite piece on my favourite album of all time and something that would take some covering... basically it would have been easy to screw it up!!! Thankfully you've aced it and I think it is absolutely excellent!

one of my favorite Steve Howe tracks is a "previously unreleased" practice version of Going for the One...it's on the remaster CD of said title...you can really hear his guitar playing in raw form unmixed

I'm floored to the ground. Looking at the title I thought "man, you must have had an hard time", but listening to the song I could easily change my mind: the various technical difficulties of this song are well within the (quite wide) range of your skills.
Amazing. I've seen guitarists wo could play Steve Howe, and singers who could sing Jon Anderson's stuff... even keyboardists who could play Rick Wakeman's stuff...but never a single musician whou could cover them all as a band and make it sound real. Wow!
I pull my hat off and hail the master.

Looks like I'm late to the party here. I don't know this particular Yes song, but it is freaking awesome and sounds like classic Yes. So... how many years has this been in the making? Please don't tell me it took a week, cause then I might just have to give up playing. All the playing and singing on this is excellent and the production/engineering on this is simply stellar!

I must repeat the question asked previously: What planet did you come from?

Scott .... not only did you pull it off, you aced it.

I saw Yes 2 years ago in London, one of the most disappointing live performances I have ever seen .. their idea of a stage set was to drape cooking foil over the amps, drums keyboards etc ..

However this song... well .. amazing job, to have nailed down each part of the band like that is beyond impressive.

another one for the ipod.

Dave

Wow!!! This is my favourite Yes track and when I saw someone had put a version up here I wasn't too sure what to expect. I think the word awesome is very overused, but this is......AWSOME!!! Not just the vocals or the guitar, drums or even the superb bass lines but the attention to detail - I can't imagine the work that must have gone into this. If I had to pick a standout part it would have to be the middle section with the superb harmony backing - to do one Jon Anderson is impressive, but 4 or 5 of them...?!!! I had decided not to use the stars option on comments but I can't help it with this... I am in awe smiley

Outstanding cover. The technical difficulty here is off the charts. You pulled off everything beautifully, especially the Steve Howe licks. Your acoustic work has always blown me away, but this whole package is amazing. This is incredibly detailed. This must have taken a very long time to put together. I am soooo impressed.
