My first collab with two exceptionally talented artists across the pond, Art and Paul777. Ever since hearing Ozzy's Diary of a Madman, I've been wanting to incorporate choirs into a classically-influenced metal composition. And only because of iComp, it happened!

Art bumped into me on this blog, and graciously offered his help on the choir arrangement. Little did I know this was going to be far more than the expected "ooh-ahh" choirs. And, I had no idea the level of detailed orchestration he'd provide either.

Paul is a buddy of mine from another music site, who recently joined iComp after several nudges. If you don't know already know him, you will. He was the first artist I found on that site, and we managed to keep in touch with each other over the past 2 years. When this project needed some killer lead guitar, Paul was the obvious choice.

Who would have thought 3 guitarists could pulled this off? Nearly 60 tracks, months of evolution, dozens of mixes, but here it is!

Music/orchestration/choir arrangement/lyrics: Art
Lead guitar: Paul
Drum loops courtesy of BetaMonkey
Music/mix/guitars/bass: me

Thanks for listening!

Excellent job all around. This is so gorgeous and huge. I have no idea how you got the choirs to sound like that. I've heard this song quite a bit the last week or so, but my initial reaction to it when I heard it the first time was just pure amazement. After listening off an on for the past few days, I'm still awe struck by it.

Creativity: I enjoyed the acoustic and electric guitars, percussion (cymbals, wind chimes, triangles) choir (female/male voices), and harpsichord and orchestrated (violin, woodwind) pieces very much.

Concept: You may want to consider shortening the choir/orchestrated intro; you want to entice the listener by shortening the time build/climax (not a long winded way). Pertaining to Metal songs the sounds of a safe haven inside a church/cathedral then take them to a dark heart throbbing ear pounding adventure (IMO).

My suggestion would to be that you only want to bring back the orchestrated towards the end; too much of it will sever the chemistry. For example: I noticed the choir is heard during the chorus and it would make sense if you did not have such an emphases on the choir in the beginning/intro therefore. I would try replacing it with another rhythm guitar, taking the place of the sung choir notation (if this makes sense...)

Performance: The lead guitar is excellent and the drums.

Production: You may want to consider adding more bass to your mix; possibly adding some slap bass parts or deep sounding violas on 1st and 3rd beat.

Overall: Awesome Jobs Guys!

~Doc

Totally awesome work guys.

Jay, you have certainly found a couple of top line guys to collaborate with, their contribution is pretty much as good as it gets. Paul's guitar work is sublime (that solo wahwah spot blows me away) and the orchestration sounds superb, I can only imagine the enormous amount of work that has gone into that. Jay, as ever stellar work on the arrangement, mix and bass too.

Personally I love the long build up, though the idea to bring back later may work well.

Personally, I think its the best rock track I've heard on icomps, pro from top to toe.

Excitement multiplied by a thousand!!! Wow! Wow! Wow!

Listened once through, just taking it all in, or at least trying to get it all into my head. *another WOW!*

Listened again with the lyrics open. I can actually hear/understand the words now. Not a problem to not understand them, though. As you mention in the note, it's the emotional impact that means more than the words themselves. I get that in the production. Totally.

I absolutely love the choir, the guitars, the orchestration, and the sum of it all. You certainly should be proud of this! All of you. Thanks for writing your blog, igno, for I might have missed this smashingly huge tune.

Tears, tears come to my eyes ....

I truly understand your note progression in the beginning.

True insanity (or discernment of Reality) basically comes from understanding that it is a cruel whirled, where others think that they create their own realities out of their minds...an insane notion. Arrogant, selfish and deluded, so you are insane--not them. Buddha failed due to the fact that he reached enlightenment...when no one is enlightened unless all are enlightened...a Buddhist tennet...get it?

CHEERS FOR THE TRACK!

Love this... this isn't the first time choirs/orchestration has been combined with metal, so I was expecting more of the usual; but I was really struck by the balance between the elements on this track... a unique take on a common metal/classical combo. Thanks, folks, for the great comments! "Metal" usually implies hypersonic drums, crushing guitars and some guy either screaming or grunting something along the lines of "Oooga booga!" Not the kind of metal I like. It's great to see so many of you taking a chance on this one. smiley

why does every popular metal track need ****ing choir vocals?
It's not that dramatic a song.
The whole choir thing just makes it sound like some one-hit-wonder-band-song from the 80s.
Learn how to be subtle, then maybe I'll be interested.

Wow, maverick, that's quite a statement! I get it that you don't like the tune. smiley

I came back for another listen, after seeing this hit #1 this week.

Choirs, for me, bring a humanity to the sound that can't be filled any other way. A choir can, in itself, cause dramatic things to happen. Large numbers of human voices raised in unison is very emotional. To have some powerful, in your face, drumming and guitaring, along with a powerful choir just makes it that much more effective ... for me. smiley I love it!

WOW this is amazing work!! smiley smiley smiley

you got some good skills!!!
but i agree with ashleyB the intro is quite a bit long, but when it kicks in!! AMAZING!!!
excellen guitar riffs, (i don't like the sound of the rythm guitars and find that in the beginning they really have a weird sound, buts just my little metal taste talking here lol)

excellent guitar playing Paul!! very good!! (but again the delay or echo you use is really realy to much in my opinion leaving us only with a guess of what is played) , i can't listen clearly to your solos, because the echo covers up the real guitar work done here,

that's really a shame smiley

for the choir: IMPRESSIVE ART!!!!!!!!!
