I was musing about Mozart.
I was thinking about original thought – so many melodies, so many tunes.
I was thinking about how everything is to the good.
I was learning a new software (Finale) – yes, this was about 19 years ago.
It began as a string quartet, and then a composer friend of mine suggested it might be too big for a string quartet. Can such a thing be so?

I began by experimenting with quilts or collages. I took a scrap from here and another from there and juxtaposed them, laid them on top of each other and sequenced them. Cut and paste them. Arranged them. I thought that might be what was going on in Mozart’s mind: idea before order.
Scraps of ideas from the mind of genius, put in sequence by chance, converging in a blurred version of the final words of Mozart: “Voca me.” (speak to me, Lord).

What was in my mind: sound before time; ideas before order. Chance. Take a chance.

Then there was an opportunity for a reading: in 2001, American Composers Forum in Atlanta was sponsoring a reading with the renowned contemporary ensemble, Thamyris. So I rearranged it for Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, ‘Cello, Contrabass and Percussion. This is Thamyris’ recording of the first movement of my suite, “Mozart’s Home.”

I think this works both as music and as an idea. Beautiful, slowly unravelling textures, Mary. The faster, jaunty section is an interesting sonic listen as well. What exactly are the percussion that you using here? They seem very 1960s classical. Although I enjoy your choral offerings, the instrumental writing is wonderful. More instrumental music! Bravo.

The sense for me is of an auditory Aurora Borealis becoming ever more intense. moving in the northern skies. At times, it is beautiful and calming, whlie turning rapidly into awe. For my own works, I don't think in these musical terms and development, but I really appreciate our differences - they can make the musical landscape that much more diverse and attractive.
