Here strung together are several songs arranged for orchestra from Appu and the Spark Collector, a children’s musical play that I wrote several years ago. The play was based on the children’s book The Sparkcollector by Brigitte Smith, a Münich artist and children’s book illustrator. This was her first book for which she supplied both the story and illustrations, and at my request she graciously adapted a script for the play. The suite lasts ten minutes.

A brief synopsis of the plot: Appu, a kind-hearted young refugee boy was wandering the earth with family and others, searching for a safe home. One day he found an unusual pair of glasses which allowed him to see sparks clinging to various objects—baskets, pots, garden tools, etc. More unusual, he watched an old man collecting the sparks in a container. When Appu asked the gentle man what he was doing, the man told Appu that he would answer the question if Appu would follow him to his home high on a hill, a place called the “Tower of Light.” Appu went with the man and found children from all over the world there. The old man explained that the sparks Appu saw on objects were left by people, unknowingly, who had used the items in doing kindly deeds for others. He collected the sparks which when put together in the Tower created a special light that could be used to bring hope and encouragement to all people in need. The children from all over the world had come to the Tower to carry lanterns filled with this light to anyone in their homelands who needed an uplift of spirit. At the close of the play, Appu himself was welcomed to be one of the light-bearers.

Terrific opening.... love the tritone inflection. I hear a bit of Gershwin in the opening clarinet melody. Excellent orchestration--one of your best, i.m.h.o. The busy, Piccolo section worked nicely as well. I like that you are not concerned with letting your music unfold at its required pace. One of my favourites from you, Tom. Bravo!

You are definitely one of my favorite artists on iComps. This is delicious! Sets the scene; tells the story; and makes me smile. And what a lovely story!
