We live in a connected world. Millions of people, just a touch of a button away. We have never been so close to our friends and family.

Then again... It's a polarised age. Everything is black and white, us and them, 'my truth', stay out of my safe space. In the midst of all this connection, we're finding new ways to be disconnected from each other...

Demo of track 8 from my new album 'Brighter Days'. Get the full album free at https://eido.bandcamp.com/album/brighter-days!

Recently I've been re-reading William Gibson. I didn't really understand his books when I read them as a kid but I certainly wanted to live in that future - a fully connected digital world, post-geographic and atemporal.

The future has actually turned out pretty cyberpunk, I'd say. It isn't entirely obvious at first sight. Many of our inner cities have undergone regeneration rather than descending into the grimy decaying filth of Blade Runner; the Japanese didn't take over the world after all; and people aren't walking around with cybernetic implants everywhere you look.

On the other hand, though, I have a small metal, glass and plastic rectangle in my pocket with which I can wirelessly access a generous percentage of the total sum of human knowledge, pretty much whenever I want to. Mega-corporations basically do rule the world. Technology has woven its way so deeply into the fabric of our lives that it's hard to imagine a time before social networks.

But do those networks really connect us? Or do they provide the illusion of connection, just enough interaction to give us the feeling that we're in touch with our friends, even though we might not have seen them for months or even years? It's common now to see a group of supposed friends around a table in a restaurant or bar, all silently tapping away at their phones rather than interacting. Is this simply a new way of conducting social interaction, or has something been lost in the process?

For those of you still valiantly attempting to follow the Dark Days story, this track was originally to be called 'Cry For Help'. The protagonist had withdrawn inside himself after a number of painful experiences, but eventually discovers that being completely cut off from others doesn't solve the problem either - it just creates a different one. One way or another, we're social creatures, and the need for an authentic connection is there no matter how much we might deny it.

That story was written in the days before Facebook (it's true, such a time really existed!). I wonder how it would play out now? Personally, I find myself somewhat nostalgic for those days - before the Internet had given a voice to every crazy person, before people had twigged that connectivity plus anonymity equals the right to behave as offensively as possible at all times.

So this track has morphed into a different kind of musing on connection - not so much the pain of separation but the complexities of today's technology-mediated interaction, with all the pros and cons that come with it.

Enjoy!

Oh, man! What an adventure! Wonderful clarity of sounds and themes. This just gets better and better! I love, love, LOVE this one!

The synthetic-ness of the instruments is superbly picked, tweaked, and combined. The intertwined paces are captivating.

Listening again … Wow! Wow! Wow!

@becwil: Why thank you! I'm pretty happy with it myself - perhaps having an enforced couple of weeks off recharged my batteries...

The change at 3:00 sent it to another level.
As for the future, you'll be working for a robot, living in a Blade Runner ghetto, and the chip implant in your brain will inflict pain if you dare to have an independent thought. Thanks - Phil

@Narananda: Many thanks, my friend. It means a lot to have people listening to a whole bunch of tracks. smiley

@falconep: There was a time when that wouldn't have sounded so bad to me, at least the 'working for a robot' part - sometimes I wonder if my staff feel that way about me...

I like the intro pad and how it develops with the trance bass. Now that you mention it, my "future" tech looks like the hybrid retro-futuristic stuff depicted in the 80s with like crts hooked up to retrofitted computers in yellowed 286 cases just capable of doing modern things and junk. I build a lot of crap out of e-waste or tend to stick to things I like, so like the other day, I was asking for help with something at work and someone told me to use the app for it until I showed them my phone with all its 39 buttons! They then lol's and helped me personally haha. The pace of this track goes good with the urgency of connected tech in the world this day.
