I recently saw myself described as 'the guy with the long hair and long answers', so here's a brief version for those who dislike waffle:

Diminished Returns is a song about trying to make good in an increasingly difficult world, struggling as more and more people place demands on you until it gets to the point that you're fighting just to keep from screwing up too badly, your dreams of a fresh start and a brighter future nothing more than faded memories. I wrote it to celebrate my two-year anniversary on iCompositions, and I hope you like it.

Personnel:
herrsolera: Drums
Eidolonia: Everything else

----

If you're still with me, time for the waffle.

Last year I noticed my anniversary on the day, and didn't have time to do more than grab an acoustic guitar and jam. This year I had a couple of weeks' warning, and in the last year I've finished an album (Shadows), been part of some great collaborations (Fit To Be Tied and So Contagious are among my proudest) and even become a moderator, so I wanted to do more to mark the occasion.

My girlfriend, Maple, suggested a reworking of the first song I uploaded. That song was Phoenix Rising, which gave me a rebirth theme that seemed appropriate for my new mod status (little did I know iC4 would be launched the same weekend!). My first attempt was a piano arrangement of Phoenix, but it sucked, so I decided to write something new, incorporating a bit of Phoenix into it but taking the song in a new direction.

I wanted the song to be emotional. My previous work has tended to be architecturally complex but lifeless -- tetsuya once said 'You play that guitar like you're dead.' Ouch. So when the embryonic lyrics with my rebirth theme were coming out clunky and I kept finding myself wanting to write about my real-life frustrations instead, I went with it, and I tried to infuse as much energy in the performances as I could, which included coming home from work early to re-record the lead vocals while I was coming down with a cold because the first take was too restrained. (I won the race against the germs, just about.)

I also called on the formidable herrsolera for drums. I'd been impressed with his work on Black Agnes, and we'd talked about him drumming for me a couple of times before -- I find drum writing difficult and tedious, so the thought of offloading that pain to someone who might actually enjoy it was welcome. Being the absolute trooper that he is, he turned around killer drum tracks within a couple of days, which got the whole recording process off to a flying start; many thanks and much respect, sir.

The same couldn't be said for the guitars, which I had to redo twice (the first time I had a ton of noise from somewhere or other, the second time I tried an experimental mic technique which sounded great but was way too heavy for the song). But once the recording was finally done, the sun came out. The mix came together like a dream, and I actually finished half a day ahead of schedule... to find iComp down for the iC4 upgrade. D'oh!

I hope you like it. Constructive criticism welcome, but so is shameless praise. Enjoy, and here's to another two years!

Gritty, angst-filled goodness, dear Eido -- "lifeless" is not an adjective I'd think to use for this powerful offering, no sir! The mix is impressive, although near the beginning, I found myself wanting to hear the keyboard brought up and the guitar brought down just a little for better balance. But as I've learned very well over the past couple of months, these subtleties can be very subjective, depending on the audio equipment in use... it could just be my headphones, which I've learned tend to downplay some things that jump to the forefront on some other sound systems.

In any case, I think you've succeeded admirably in making this emotional and gripping. It worked that way for me, in any case. This is an impressive composition on any level, well performed and masterfully mixed. It was a pleasure to experience this personal iComp anniversary offering from you.

(On an unrelated note: I like the new profile pic, but for the record, I rather liked the old one, and don't see how anyone could have experienced any "gender confusion" looking at it. I agree with the iComper who said that it made you look very Edgar Winter-y, which is one of the things I always found appealing about it. But the new one's good, too. smiley)

Argh. It's quite possible that the acoustic guitar balance is all wrong. While I was automating the volume on the vocal track (to cut down the power of the sibilants) I inadvertently clicked on the acoustic track, changing its volume, and Logic's undo for some reason only removed the automation point -- it didn't set the volume back to what it should have been. So I took a guess, and I had a feeling it was probably a little too loud, but it didn't strike me as hugely offensive and I was getting to the point where I could think of a million tiny things to tweak in the mix, so I forced myself to stop. Curses.

Man, this is really good. Your voice sounds great, and it is both arranged and played really well. The part that I absolutely loved was the end, when the feedbacking lead is sustained while the heavy rhythm section is dropped and replaced by the delicate piano part. Brilliant. I had to go back and listen to that part 5 or 6 times. Well done.

You know music like this needs more recognition in the world. It's not dance/pop (and there's nothing wrong with that either), but there is a great metal folk thing happening here that I like. To steal a title from one of new favorite a bassists Rhonda Smith, it's intellipop. Well in this case it's Intelli-ROCK!!!

I love your voice here Eido. You remind me of Richard Thompson in parts.

Now if there were things in need of modification it'd be this:

More bass. The bass is doing some great stuff in this tune, so why hide it? It's really imortant in the structure of this tune (to me) so I'd pump it up on this one.

I love the drums, but they're flat in this mix. It could be the format of the delivery. I know if this were a raw file, it's sound a million times better too.

These days, flat drums sounds and low bass are part and parcel of the mp3 format. Horrible limitations in file compression and any compression (just look what JPG does to a file) can unintentionally kill a great mix. So maybe mix for the limitations when releasing online? Just a thought.

Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed, and you're NOTplaying like you're dead here to me. Lots of life in this one. smiley

Hi Eido:

I took the approach to listen to your music differently instead of analyzing the Production, more the composition.

Pros: The overall structure is key (Intro/Movement1->Bridge/Movement2->Bridge/Climax (solo)->Bridge/Movement1->Ending). I really enjoy the aggressive & less-aggressive approach throughout the piece. smiley Your compositions as with herrsolera are like a well-written storybook that has fantasy, which flourishes with inspiration! Your pieces always come-together with the beginning and ending that offers closure and are always polished! Creativity & performance are never a let-down from these ears. smiley

Cons:The intro, classical, melodically movement (Piano & acoustic guitar)has a little emptiness perhaps adding some strings.

A very elegant as well as aggressive musical piece.

Bravo!

Doc, thanks for the comprehensive review! With regard to the guitar/piano section, I did think about adding some orchestration, actually. In the end the reason I skipped it was because I was shooting for a 'jam' feel, two musicians playing off against each other, and I felt that orchestration would give it a premeditated sense that would work against what I was trying to do. But I take your point about the emptiness on board; perhaps a bass and some gentle percussion would have helped. (I didn't have any drums in there because that section wasn't even written when I sent the project to herrsolera for his contribution -- the song was written in a crazy order, because it was in a rush, and I didn't want to keep messing him around saying 'Oh, by the way, I added a two-minute intro at a variable tempo that's going to be a nightmare for you to work with in GarageBand.' smiley Even as it was, I pulled the rug out from under him once when he'd already done his first draft and I decided to double the length of each verse...)

Thanks for the comments, everyone -- keep them coming!

Have some more shameless praise for your undead soul and the "IntelliRock" going on here. Both you and Herrsollera have a keen sense of the sweeping dynamics of a full suite. Your guitar sounds are ridiculously huge and clear and ... well, spot on!! Your voice sounds great though I think some harmonies could have thickened them up a bit, though that's neither here nor there as it works very well as is. And the production is well spaced out (on my computer speakers it sounds awesome!). Anyway, thanks mate, great track indeed!

Absolutely excellent track, Eido!!! Love the interplay between piano and the great progressions from the rhythm guitar in that wonderfully extended Intro, before turning toward the nice, slow-tempo exposition/verse. And then we rock out in the chorus--Metal proper. If I were to offer one suggestion, it would be to re-work that final trasition into the coda/outro. When the guitars and everything start fading away, I thought the track might be ending there, then the piano pops in at normal volume and we have another concluding phrase before the final fade out. I think this could be produced to create a smoother flow. All-in-all, I really love the epic and lovely harmonies and top-notch songwriting here. Download and favorite for sure. Well done, gentlemen!

I've given the song a good seven listens, and suffice it to say, I love it. I'm glad that I only got little snippets and bits and pieces to work with, because the end result was astounding (which isn't to say I was surprised; I knew it was going to be great, but it's a first for me to sit back and hear a song develop). I disagree with some of the comments on here when I say that I don't think there should be any additional layering to the intro - the piano/guitar duet is lovely. It was a little awkward the first time I heard the slight tempo change, but now it's quite natural and a tasty transition.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but were you channeling Eternity-era Vincent Cavanaugh for this song? Because I'm definitely getting that vibe from you. You're much grittier and edgier than you were in your cover of "Shroud of False", where you sounded more like Stephen Wilson. It's a great delivery though - really underlines the vulnerability and doubt in the lyrics, but definitely leaving room for imminent triumph. I like the anger that comes through in your voice right before the chorus. I trust you've vanquished any apprehension about recording vocals, because you've proven that you're more than just a great guitarist and songwriter.

Definitely noticed the Phoenix rising from the ashes during the solo. In fact, this whole section, including the very end, reminds me a lot of Therion. Great stuff. And damn, those drums sound much, much better than what I sent you. Whatever you did to them was superb, and, at the risk of shedding any humility I might have, I love hearing them.

Glad to (finally!) hear some new stuff from you. Thanks a million for inviting me to participate because yes, as strange as it sounds, I definitely enjoy drumwork. Here's to another two years, and more opportunities to collaborate!

I had a suspicion that this would be a track that might need a few listens to fully appreciate it's impact. On second listen (on the 'phones) I was totally drawn in. Matt, this is the first time I've heard you sing and to call your voice unique in this genre might be an understatement. That said, I was hanging on your every intone. I really want to hear you sing in another genre but I have not figured out which one. It made me think of a vocalist from 'Eyeless in Gaza' or maybe even the 'Monochrome Set'. Anyhow, the instrumentation was great. That solo was killer near the end. The transition of that very last section seemed a touch abrupt (but I can't be all 'shameless praise'). I'm glad that Dan was involved too, this track smacks of his style so this collab makes perfect sense. So, congrats and thank God tetsuya has not listened to my guitar playing!

Ok, I'm back.

I knew I wouldn't be able to listen through the site just once and have an opinion. I've just listened 3 times, back-to-back.

This is masterful.

The acoustic guitar is a wee strong, and has some background noise as well, but I think it works with the mood that's immediately set. I actually prefer it being just guitar/piano. The starkness would be completely ruined otherwise. How the song morphs into electric guitar, and then full-on metal, with you singing (!!!) was perfect. I'm hearing lotza passion in the vocal delivery. Like jk, I was hanging on each word. And the drum programming by Dan totally works throughout -- I'm not really sensing them being flat as mentioned above. Nice work, Dan. The ending transition back to the piano via that held, sustained note was perfect.

Yes, more of a bass presence would fill out the mix, but this will get lots of iPod play over here in Igno-land.

Well done, gents. Thanks for sharing. And now that you're a mod and all, don't you dare stop recording!

yes its a great piece love the segues between the moods personally the 1st segment vocals could be more dreamy before the metal take off. (i mean the delivery is fine, phase effect maybe would make it purfec for me) lol.

xavoblues Artist Wow!! What a great song!! the structure is so well crafted, it has all the subtleties and dynamics you can expect for this kind of song. Your production is awesome and the mix has a great balance, something that can be very hard on a song that has so many parts. The guitar riffs are amazing and I just loved the solo, it has power and anger and feel, nothing like a dead player!! I feel you left a lot of yourself in this work, it sounds very personal and honest, and that is the most important thing you can achieve in music. The drums are so cool, very strong and everything is just in place. What else can I say, just don't worry about the little things that can be improved because you did an excellent job here.

Its good, very good. Great piano playing throughout, soulful and sorrowful. The guitars are excellent, brilliant lead playing. I too would request more bass in the mix, but it didn't stop me enjoying the track. I thought the drum programming was perfect for the song, though I'd give them a little more low end beef, to bring out the power a bit more. It's a powerful and thoughtful song, well composed, and very well put together. Bravo Eido and Dan.

Nice intro really sounds very lush, I was surprised by the vocals even though I have heard you sing before I think. Anyways the vocals sounded nice. As for the production it's top notch. I trying to find things to nit pick but it sort of hard without being anal. Well maybe after the vocals stop and the distorted rhythm guitar and melodic lead part start you could add an aggressive vocal line over that section. Anyhow Good job dude, nice job on the drums as well herrsolera.

This is absolutely wonderful. That intro sets the mood masterfully... 'n damn... that piano... I love it. The tone of the acoustic is perfection... I wish I could get that tone!
When the verse comes in, that's when I was hooked... right off the bat. The operatic approach to the vocals mixed with this grunge vibe is right up my ally.
Then it breaks into the meat... 'n the listener can't help but sink their teeth deep into it... with the juices rushing down.
The growl at the end of the second verse brought this delightful smile to my face...
... 'n that solo... with all of this going on to back it up... it's epically classical.
So sorrowful... so grand. So skillfully crafted... that lead guitar sings with the breath of a damned angel.
'n to read how you were doin' this with technical problems... I'm really effin' impressed Eido. Really.

I. Want. More.

More!!!

Seriously though, great job guys. I LOVE the composition and the instrumentals. In fact, the instrumentals were so good that it almost didn't matter what the vocals sounded like. That being said, in the spirit of giving Eido the same helpful critical attention he gives me, (not knocking-- seriously!) I'll give my two cents on the vocals.

Emotion, in my opinion, is the most important part of recording vocals. I think you recognize that too-- the emotional character of the vocals is there! I also really like the natural tone of your voice, as well as the transitional death growls. THAT being said, I can't really figure out what's going on with the dynamics and tone of the vocals as you change pitch and hold out notes. Did you use Auto Tune by chance? When you hold out notes, it sounds like you start to breath/sing out more than you need to in order to keep the note going and add vibrato (as a result, the vocals get louder and start to get a little shaky). At times, it almost sounds like-- and I know this'll sound weird-- the lyrics were recorded backwards and reversed in post. I suppose it just has to do with breathing, as well as opening/closing the throat at weird times. Technical stuff aside, I was really moved by the piece-- the emotions of the vocals were convincing enough for me, to be honest, and it was really cool hearing you sing (for me, it was the first time). I really dig how you "put yourself out there" as they say. Overall, great job.

Thanks for the comment! What you're hearing isn't a tuning artefact or anything like that; it's how I was singing. As with apparently all fields of music, my vibrato is fairly poor. In order to get any kind of vibrato in a note at all I have to put more into it than I'd normally choose to, hence the apparent swells when I add vibrato to long notes.

It's on my list of things to work on... along with a lot of stuff!

I'm glad I discovered this tune of yours. This music is very true to the description you gave. I really dig when the drums and vocals come in! And then when the guitars come in! Very nice composition!

Well done. I like the guitar / piano intro and especially how it picks up at the end. Great chord changes and then, to top it off, a great solo.

2nd comment... this song just rocks so much. Despite my previous comments on the vocals, I absolutely love their tone and conviction.
